Overview of copper slag

Copper slag is a solid waste produced in the process of copper smelting, mainly composed of unextracted ore components and compounds formed during the smelting process. It not only arouses concern in environmental protection, but also is studied for its potential economic value. The composition of copper slag varies depending on the smelting process and raw materials, and usually contains metal oxides such as silicon, aluminum, iron, magnesium, and a small amount of copper and other valuable metals.

Source and composition of copper slag

Copper slag mainly comes from the smelting process of copper ore. In traditional smelting methods, the ore is heated to high temperatures and reacted with a reducing agent (such as coke) to extract copper. In this process, the part that fails to be converted into metallic copper forms copper slag. Taking the Mansfeld region of Germany as an example, the copper content of the copper ore in the region ranges from 0.23% to 2.9%. A large amount of copper slag is produced during the smelting process. It is estimated that 66 million tons have been piled up near the smelter.

Chemical composition of copper slag

The chemical composition of copper slag mainly includes:

Silicon dioxide (SiO₂): usually accounts for a high proportion and is an important component in forming the slag structure.

Aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃): affects melting characteristics and fluidity.

Iron oxide (FeO/Fe₂O₃): provides some metal elements.

Magnesium oxide (MgO), **calcium oxide (CaO)**, etc.: affect melting point and fluidity.

Environmental impact of copper slag

Due to its complex composition, copper slag may cause environmental pollution if it is not properly stacked and handled. For example, heavy metals may enter the soil and water bodies through rainwater leaching, affecting the ecosystem. Therefore, it is particularly important to manage and utilize copper slag reasonably.

Copper slag is a by-product produced in the copper smelting process. In recent years, it has shown a variety of application potentials in modern technology. The following are the main applications of copper slag in different fields.

  1. Surface cleaning and sandblasting

Copper slag, as an efficient sandblasting material, is widely used in metal surface cleaning. Its sharp particles can effectively remove rust, old paint and other dirt from metal surfaces, and are suitable for cleaning large steel structures, pipelines and ships, etc.

Compared with traditional abrasives, copper slag has higher efficiency and lower environmental impact in sandblasting applications because it produces less dust and is less harmful to humans and the environment3.

Copper slag is widely used as a building material, especially in concrete production. As a partial substitute for sand, copper slag can not only reduce construction costs, but also improve the compressive strength and durability of concrete. Studies have shown that concrete using copper slag as aggregate performs well in compressive strength and can effectively meet the requirements of modern construction for material properties.

High-density concrete

In special applications, such as nuclear radiation shielding, copper slag is added to high-density concrete to increase its radiation resistance. This concrete is widely used in nuclear power plants and other facilities that require protection due to its excellent physical properties.

  1. Waterjet and deep-sea structures

Copper slag also plays an important role in waterjet technology. Its high density makes it an ideal material for cutting marine structures such as submarine pipelines and platforms. When using a water jet, copper slag can quickly and effectively cut hard materials, improving work efficiency1.

  1. Anti-skid additives

In road construction, copper slag is often used as an anti-skid additive. Its rough surface can increase the friction of the road, thereby improving driving safety. In addition, it can also be used in roofing materials to enhance its durability and anti-skid properties.

  1. Environmental protection and recyclability

Copper slag can not only be used as an industrial raw material, but also has good environmental protection characteristics. It can be used to make products such as abrasives and grinding wheels through reprocessing. This reuse method not only reduces waste emissions, but also reduces the demand for new raw materials, thereby contributing to the sustainable use of resources13.

  1. Mine filling materials

In recent years, studies have found that copper slag can be used as mine filling materials. This application can not only reduce the cost of mine filling, but also reduce the dependence on ordinary Portland cement, thereby reducing the environmental burden.
